Apparatus Technician

NESC Staffing is seeking a Substation Testing & Commissioning Engineer to support complex utility and power delivery projects. Responsibilities

Lead and execute electrical substation testing, commissioning, and startup activities to safely support energization
Troubleshoot protection & control systems and substation equipment issues; drive root-cause analysis and resolution
Produce accurate field documentation, test reports, and as-left records while coordinating with project teams
Apply current industry testing and commissioning standards and guidelines while maintaining safe work execution
Deliver high-level customer service and maintain professional, respectful relationships with clients and internal teams
Promote efficient flow of information; maintain complete, accurate field records and documentation
Perform advanced troubleshooting and problem analysis related to protection & control systems and utility substation equipment, including: application, drawing, and wiring errors/omissions, equipment malfunctions and questionable test results, battery ground faults and related DC system issues
Support technically complex field activities and participate in project meetings (kickoff, planning, progress, and lessons learned)
Identify risk and mitigation techniques for utility systems and equipment; follow site risk assessment requirements for high-risk activities
Learn and follow safe circuit isolation/restoration processes to prevent unintended operations and protect personnel and systems
Prepare detailed daily, weekly, and closeout reports covering progress, issues, recommendations, test results, and analyses
Maintain drawing management and field housekeeping practices to support safety and performance
Keep working/field copies of drawings continuously updated to reflect as-left conditions
Execute tests and develop detailed test reports for electrical equipment; review test results for acceptance and ensure records are properly filed and distributed
Assist other engineers/technicians during commissioning and startup, as needed
Conduct formal walkdowns prior to energizing equipment, ensuring readiness and compliance with procedures

Required

Associate degree in a technical field or equivalent training/experience (including journeyman/apprentice electrical training, military electrical power training, and/or industry-recognized power systems testing certification at an advanced level)
Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment with strong initiative and self-motivation
Beginning-to-intermediate knowledge of electrical systems; solid understanding of AC/DC schematics, wiring/interconnect drawings, and one-line/three-line diagrams
Ability to analyze and utilize drawings in commissioning and testing processes
Ability to learn test-equipment software used to conduct and document field test activities
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to communicate effectively in the field and in project settings
Strong PC skills, including proficiency with common documentation tools and PDF software
Valid U.S. driver's license (in good standing)
Ability to operate a man-lift, or willingness to become certified
Ability to routinely lift up to 50 lbs of test equipment
Must be available for out-of-town travel for multiple weeks at a time
Must be available for flexible hours, including weekends, overtime, holidays, and night work as needed
