Senior Controls Design Engineer
Peak Demand is a leading controls and automation technology company delivering high-performance solutions across renewable energy, energy storage, and industrial power applications. The Senior Controls Developer will play a critical role in advancing a next-generation Power Plant Controller platform used across large-scale PV and BESS projects, focusing on designing sophisticated control logic and contributing to platform architecture.
Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain advanced PPC control applications using CodeSYS and SEL RTAC environments
Implement closed-loop control strategies coordinating inverters, battery systems, and grid interfaces
Write clean, modular, and maintainable IEC 61131-3 structured text code aligned with modern software best practices
Utilize AI-enabled development tools to improve code quality, testing efficiency, and delivery speed
Own end-to-end validation of control logic through simulation, self-testing, and regression analysis
Contribute to CI/CD workflows and support automation within PPC development pipelines
Partner with internal teams to standardize configuration management and deployment practices
Collaborate with modeling teams to validate controls using SIL and HIL methodologies
Support testing within platforms such as Opal-RT, PSCAD, or similar simulation environments
Explore model-driven development approaches to improve scalability and repeatability
Support implementation and commissioning of PPC software for projects with advanced interconnection requirements
Ensure control logic aligns with standards such as IEEE 2800 and regional interconnection requirements (ERCOT, CAISO, PJM)
Assist with commissioning, troubleshooting, tuning, and performance verification in the field
Develop clear technical documentation covering control strategies, configurations, and workflows
Support training and knowledge transfer for engineering and project teams
Contribute to internal standards and reusable control logic frameworks
Qualification
Required
4–7 years of experience developing control systems for utility-scale renewables, grid-connected power systems, or industrial automation
Strong proficiency in CodeSYS, IEC 61131-3, and structured text programming
Experience with SEL RTAC platforms and commissioning environments
Familiarity with SIL/HIL testing and simulation-based validation
Solid understanding of PV and BESS plant architectures, grid interconnection, and power electronics behavior
Experience working with Git-based version control and CI/CD pipelines
Preferred
BSEE or MSEE in Electrical, Controls, or Computer Engineering
Experience with model-based design tools (Simulink, PLECS, or similar)
Exposure to AI-assisted development tools in engineering workflows
Commissioning experience in ERCOT, CAISO, or PJM markets
Scripting experience (Python, PowerShell, or similar)
