Responsibilities

Has a thorough understanding of pulmonary physiology and pulmonary diagnostic testing modalities
Knowledgeable of ATS guidelines. Stays current on updates and changes to testing practice
Provides pulmonary diagnostic testing to all age ranges, including but not limited to: spirometry with or without bronchodilator, lung volume testing, exhaled nitric oxide, diffusing capacity, respiratory muscle strength, ETCO2, 6 minute walk testing, exercise provocation, methacholine challenge, cold air challenge, cardiopulmonary exercise/metabolic testing, high altitude simulation testing, and forced oscillometry
Understands and documents contraindications to testing, patient effort and technique during testing, and any interventions that were performed accurately and clearly
Able to coach patients of all ages and abilities to try to obtain accurate data on pulmonary function testing. Makes accurate notes if the test needs to be interpreted with caution, and knows when to not report data due to lack of patient ability to perform the maneuver
Able to provide basic maintenance and troubleshooting on testing machines
Provides and reinforces health teaching with patients and families
Participates in multidisciplinary treatment team
Preceptor for novice pulmonary function technologists
Utilizes available resources to impact patient care and solve practice problems
Practice contributes toward achieving the Respiratory Care Vision Statement and promoting the highest standard of practice in the pulmonary function lab
Utilizes the National Patient Safety Goals to provide a safe environment for patients. Maintains a safe environment for self and others
Assists in Pulmonary Clinic as needed
Participates in the Pavilion Response Team as assigned
Performs pulmonary diagnostic testing to inpatients as ordered
Participates in the development of professional and educational activities:
Participates in continuing educational opportunities at Children’s
Supports the professional organizations of Respiratory Care and Pulmonary Function Technologists
Shares pertinent information gained from professional seminars, conferences, books, or journals
Assists in identifying learning needs of staff therapist and other healthcare workers, including educating new residents, nurses, medical assistants, etc. regarding what is involved in pulmonary function testing and what we offer as a lab
Develops, presents and evaluates programs to meet educational needs of other healthcare workers
Is a member of interdisciplinary committee/project/task force
Incorporates research to clinical practice:
Demonstrates knowledge of research and quality improvement activities
Reads and evaluates current research that has implications for clinical practice and changes in testing protocols
Shares research findings with colleagues in order to improve clinical practice
Participates in research and quality improvement activities

Required

Respiratory Care Practitioner
At least 1 year 18 months of full time experience following graduation from a Respiratory Care program
Two-year Associate's degree or equivalent experience Associates degree in Respiratory Care
Respiratory Care Practitioner Texas license Upon Hire
RRT - Registered Respiratory Therapist from NBRC Upon Hire
Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers as required by CP 1.20 Life Support Course Requirements
Effective April 20, 2020, new employees must obtain PACES certification within 6 months of hire and existing employees must obtain PACES certification upon expiration of their PEARS certification (no later than April 20, 2022)
Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist or Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist from NBRC within 6 months of hire date 180 Days

Preferred

At least 3 years experience preferably in pediatric/ neonatal care
Four-year Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
Neonatal Pediatric Specialist from NBRC
AARC Membership - American Association for Respiratory Care
Asthma Educator Certification from NAECB
