Responsibilities

Working independently to conduct audits, reviewing account details for accuracy
Attend all basic tax law and audit training classes
Initiating appointments to meet with taxpayers and any representatives to clearly explain audit findings & identifying interrelated fraud schemes; applying professional conversational skills
Be able to prepare accurate audit reports and clearly written correspondence to taxpayers; including other relevant audit-related tasks
Willing & able to spend the majority of their time (50%) working at various locations other than their home, or office, in a single day
Willing to travel at least fifty percent (50%) of the time, which may include overnight travel
Possessing effective communication skills, and the ability to thoroughly prepare for the possibility of testifying in court, on determined audit liabilities
Properly analyzing financial documents, effectively interpreting data, making decisions in the best interest of the State, and preparing case documents with clear, concise, detailed notes

Required

Under close supervision of the Supervising Tax Auditor, the Tax Auditor (TA) conducts the least to moderately difficult field audits, and fraud/tax evasion audits
The TA audits accounts, attends basic tax law and audit training classes, makes audit appointments, meets with taxpayers and their representatives, explains the audit findings, assists in identifying interrelated fraud schemes, may testify in court to liabilities determined, and prepares appropriate audit reports and written correspondence to taxpayers
This position is designated as a mobile worker position and will require an incumbent to spend the majority of their time (fifty percent or more) working at various locations other than their home or office in a single day
Positions within California require the incumbent to travel at least fifty percent (50%) of the time, which includes overnight travel

Position requires employee to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a background investigation
Travel is required fifty percent (50%) of the time
Position may require overnight travel for up to five consecutive nights to meet training requirements
Education: For classifications where the Minimum Qualifications (MQs) are based on meeting education requirements only: If education is required to meet the MQs please attach a copy of all of your transcripts that show the completion of the required education
Applicants who completed their education outside the United States (with foreign degrees/transcripts) must obtain and submit verification of United States course/degree equivalency by the time of appointment
