Utility Systems Technician I

Anne Arundel County Office of Personnel is looking to fill full-time Utility Systems Technician I positions in the Department of Public Works, Utility Operations. This entry-level role involves fieldwork to identify and measure extraneous flows into water and wastewater lines, including installing and maintaining monitoring equipment and assisting in flow measurements.

Government Administration

Responsibilities

Works as member of a flow monitoring or infiltration/inflow sewer survey crew performing field investigations; installs and maintains flow monitoring equipment; assists on day time and night time flow measurement of water and sewer lines; investigates inflow conditions during inclement weather and participates in the work of smoke-testing or dye water test crews
Performs appropriate physical inspection of manholes and lamping of water and sewer pipelines and other evaluation techniques for identifying infiltration/inflow conditions; helps to seek out the cause of extraneous flows or sewer related problems; reviews plan and 200-foot drawings relating to pumping station service area sewers; assists in field evaluation of new and old sewer systems and problem areas for TV inspection and rehabilitation; draws inspection maps showing field conditions, smoke and dye test results, or manhole and pipeline surveys
Locates and manually digs up manhole covers; participates in routine computations of survey data or changes flow monitoring charts; assists in the calibration of flow monitoring equipment and monitoring points; takes care of assigned equipment and vehicles. Performs related work as required

Required

Graduation from high school
One (1) or more years experience in the construction and maintenance of water distribution or wastewater collection systems
A valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license
Some knowledge of general safety requirements, including specific requirements for confined spaces and traffic control
Some knowledge of collection and distribution system construction, operations, and maintenance
Some knowledge of elementary mathematics
Skills in the use of hand tools
Ability to identify different types of pipe (cast iron, ductile iron, terra cotta, truss, PVC) and deficiencies in manhole or pipe joint construction
Ability to operate a truck and operate gas detection devices
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions quickly and accurately
Ability to read tape and engineer's rule
Ability to perform manual labor such as opening and closing manhole covers for extended periods of time and work under unfavorable conditions
