USAJOBS is seeking a Plumber & Pipefitter to join the Department of the Air Force at Barksdale AFB. The primary purpose of this position is to install, modify, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair industrial or domestic high-temperature water and high-pressure piping systems and equipment.

Responsibilities

Independently installs, modifies, repairs, maintains, plans and lays out a variety of new and existing high- pressure piping systems expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, and circulating pumps, disposal systems and equipment such as sewage system and collection components

Plans, lays out, assembles, installs, repair, and/or modification of high pressure piping systems and equipment applying and interpreting information in blueprints, charts, and sketches. Determines system routing, placement, pitch, elevation, and operation; and calculates pipe, joint, and valve sizes needed to support system pressures(s)

Examines troubleshoots/tests various equipment industrial plant machinery, high pressure piping systems plumbing systems and equipment including backflow prevention devices such as reduced pressure principle devices, double check devices, atmospheric vacuum breakers, and other cross connection devices to determine area(s) of difficulty

Performs preventive maintenance services. Conducts periodic preventive and recurring inspections on wastewater equipment and systems, water wells, water pumping and treatment equipment for condition and proper operation. Checks operation of filters. Determines nature and complexity of repair(s) needed. Operates one or more types of heavy equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level earth to rough specifications on such projects as construction sites, emergency and routine utility repairs, installations or rerouting utility pipes. Moves earth on steep slopes, graded curves and shoulders, soft ground, hilly forests, and other surfaces with similar rough features

Performs pretest, operational (functional), and final testing; final tuning; alignment; and/or calibration of moderately complex electronic control systems, components, and/or subassemblies. Performs functional tests to determine if any operating defects are present by exploration of probable reasons and to locate equipment, component, and/or subassembly malfunctions. Utilizes safe work practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4200, Plumbing and Pipefitting Group

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying

The screen out element for this position is ability to do the work of a WG-4201 PLUMBER & PIPEFITTER without more than normal supervision

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, operation, and repair, to include routing, placement, slant, slope, and fall of systems; and of technical practices in order to plan, layout, install, modify, troubleshoot, and repair various systems and equipment

Knowledge of utility distribution and storage systems and of the physical properties and hazards associated with the handling various types of chemicals, and of preventive maintenance and inspection techniques as applied to utility distribution, storage systems and water treatment

Knowledge of safety, environmental and security regulations, procedures, practices and programs

Skill in installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment without more than normal supervision

Skill in using and maintaining tools and equipment such as levels, plumb bobs, various gages and meters, hydrostatic pumps, power tools, pressure testing tools and equipment, electrical test and measuring equipment, combustible and toxic gas indicators, and in using shop mathematics, taking measurements, and laying out angles, arcs, and circles

Skill in troubleshooting difficult or hard-to-detect leaks and operating problems

Skill and ability to read and use the requirements in technical manuals, shop directives, multi view blueprints, sketches, diagrams, work orders, and other specifications

Ability to learn Engineering Equipment Operator operation and controls and to learn to troubleshoot electrical controls/operations

The employee makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the parts of systems worked on are in hard-to-reach places also hanging from confined space hoist wearing very uncomfortable safety harness

This requires the employee to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions

The employee frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 55 pounds unassisted and occasionally items weighing more with assistance of material lifting devices or other workers

The work is done inside and outside where there is exposure to dust, dirt, grease, chemicals, steam, noise, and unpleasant odors

The employee is sometimes required to make repairs and installations outside in adverse weather conditions

Often makes repairs in areas where bad smelling fumes are present

The employee has occasional exposure to the possibility of broken bones and frequent exposure to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, burns, and infections

Employee also has chemical exposure to Muriatic acid, chlorine, and/or ammonia gas inhalation or work in confined spaces that has the potential for oxygen depleted atmosphere

Employee may be required to wear safety equipment, such as safety shoes, glasses, gloves, and hard hats and other personal protective equipment
