Accounting Technician III - BU

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is a community-centered utility delivering essential services to Seattle residents. They are seeking an Accounting Technician III to provide customer service regarding payroll inquiries, review timesheets, perform payroll audits, and ensure compliance with payroll guidelines.

Government Administration

Responsibilities

Provide customer service to employees at all levels of the organization regarding payroll-related inquiries and issues
Review and audit timesheets on a biweekly basis to ensure hours are accurate and properly approved
Perform preliminary payroll audits in coordination with Departmental Payroll Administrators (DPAs) prior to final payroll processing, utilizing payroll audit reports (e.g., DPA009, DPA010, DPA007)
Process benefits-related adjustments, deductions, and one-time payments, including overtime meal allowances and meal reimbursements in Workday
Prepare and process consolidated deduction requests and other payroll adjustments as needed
Ensure compliance with payroll processing guidelines, collective bargaining agreements, and SPU, City, Federal, and State rules and regulations
Collaborate with SPU’s Employment and Acquisition Team, Labor Relations Coordinator, Benefits and Leave Coordination Team, Central Payroll, and Workday Support on payroll-related matters
Work effectively in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate flexibility with shifting priorities and deadlines

Required

Three (3) years of accounting, payroll, or bookkeeping experience or one (1) year work experience as an Accounting Technician II (or a combination of education/experience/training which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class)

Preferred

Strong payroll processing background
Excellent communication, customer service, and organizational skills
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Experience researching and reconstructing employee payroll transactions
Demonstrated efficiency in Microsoft Excel, Work, 10 key calculator, mainframe computer payroll systems & internet navigation
Ability to interpret and communicate payroll related rules & regulations
Ability to work under pressure and meet short payroll processing deadlines
