Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven Hospital is offering a paid mentorship program for student nurses. The Student Nurse Intern will work under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, performing unlicensed clinical skills and providing support to the unit while gaining valuable experience in various medical and surgical subspecialties.

The Student Nurse Intern (SNI) is defined as a nursing student who is currently enrolled in an accredited BSN School/Department of Nursing Program
The student nurse has successfully completed their school 's Fundamental Nursing Skills Laboratory and is currently enrolled in or has completed at least one semester of relevant Clinical practicum in their School/Department of Nursing Program
Under the direction of the Registered Nurse the Student Nurse Intern will perform unlicensed clinical skills and provide environmental support to the unit
Students will NOT prepare or administer any medications, prepare, initiate or administer any IV or arterial therapy, prepare or administer blood or blood components, or accept physician or LIP orders
Students will work with RN preceptor/mentor on all designated activities
Patient and family centered care (PFCC) at YNHH is demonstrated by working with patients and their families based on the 4 principles of PFCC: participation, dignity and respect, information sharing, and collaboration
This includes providing service excellence by creating a great "First Impression" by demonstrating exemplary customer service skills for all customer groups including patients, families/friends, physicians, staff and support department personnel
Adheres to the "I Am YNHH" service excellence pledge and promotes a positive work environment
Safety and Emergency Management: Responds appropriately to patient and hospital based emergency situations
Performs all patient care procedures safely following the hospital's policies and procedures Ensures patient and family confidentiality at all times
Summons assistance in emergency situations as outlined in the hospital's policies and procedures
Maintains a clean and safe environment for patients
Consistently utilizes principles of safe lifting
Consistently practices infection control and universal precautions techniques
Nursing Process: Practices within the Patient and Family Centered Care (PFCC) Model and applies nursing process under the supervision of a Registered Nurse
Accepts report with RN on patient assignments and participates actively in patient care conferences with RN
Collaborates with the RN to analyze data to identify patient problems/needs
Collaborates with the RN to formulate nursing interventions related to problems/needs identified
Collaborates with RN to assess patient’s responses to interventions
Communicates immediately to the RN all changes or observations of the patient's condition
Collects and documents data (vital signs, intake and output, etc.) in the patient’s medical record
Follows established procedure in performing selected nursing functions; example: unit POCT once trained/validated
Provides patient/family education as assigned and observed by the RN (i.e. strict intake and output, etc.)
Identifies and sets priorities regarding patient needs under direct supervision of RN
Organizes and provides care based on priority needs under direct supervision of RN
Patient Population: Demonstrates an increased level of clinical competence and clinical judgment by relating nursing theory to practice
Collaborates with RN regarding the following:
Researches and correlates signs and symptoms to the history and pathophysiology of illness Correlates scientific basis and the rationale for selected nursing interventions Correlates rationale for medication plan with patient's condition Accesses Clinical Work Station to increase nursing knowledge through the use of : Clinical Practice Manual, library, reference materials, and other educational resources
Procedures and Therapies: Provides direct nursing care and performs clinical nursing skills under the supervision of the Registered Nurse
Provides nursing care to patients preserving the patient's right to dignity, respect and autonomy
Performs selected non-sterile treatments (i.e. cold compress) and procedures under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse
Performs technical duties and selected tasks as delegated by the Registered Nurse
Performs all patient care procedures safely following the hospital's policies and procedures
Leadership: Refines communication skills with patients, families and multi-disciplinary health team members, develops professional relationships and demonstrates increased professional accountability
Reports to unit on time
Provides proper notification for unscheduled absences or tardiness
Presents neat appearance in professional nursing attire and with hospital identification
Introduces self to patient and family as the patient's Student Nurse Intern
Demonstrates appropriate interpersonal communication skills
Interacts effectively and constructively with nursing staff members to ensure a positive work environment
Communicates in a professional manner to colleagues and works toward resolution of issues and concerns
Collaborates to assist in unit activities as needed
Seeks assistance/supervision appropriately
Accepts direction and feedback constructively
Actively seeks new clinical learning opportunities
Participates in unit based staff meetings and educational initiatives

Qualification

BLS CertificationClinical Rotation ExperienceAccredited RN ProgramPatient Care SkillsCommunication Skills

Required

Currently enrolled in an accredited RN program – entering senior year
Successful completion of at least 1 clinical rotation and Fundamentals of Nursing prior to start of program
Able to provide proof of current BLS Certification
Must commit to work 24 hours/week every week for the duration of the program – you must be available to start on 5/27/2025
