SENIOR SPECIALIST, RESEARCH SAFETY, Research Compliance, Research Safety
Boston University is seeking a Senior Specialist in Research Safety within their Environmental Health & Safety division. This role involves developing and implementing safety programs and policies, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, and providing training and guidance on laboratory safety practices.

Responsibilities
Develops, maintains, and implement safety programs, policies, and procedures in accordance with federal, state and local laws, standards, and other applicable regulations and best practices
Assists the Institutional Biosafety Committee, Laboratory Safety Committee, and the Institutional Animal Use and Care Committee by providing reports, serving as technical subject matter experts, and assisting with the development of policies, procedures, and guidance documents
Works closely with the their assigned schools and departments to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations
Performs laboratory design consultations
Reviews and designs safe research experiments
Implements safety policies and procedures
Conducts comprehensive laboratory verification inspections
Reviews activities involving the use of hazardous materials including but not limited to infectious biological substances, recombinant DNA, hazardous chemicals, toxic gases, controlled substances
Develops emergency action plans
Provides health & safety training
Provides guidance and training on transport and shipping of biological materials and chemicals
Reviews use of hazardous materials in research and experimental animal procedures
Coordinates visits and inspections by outside regulatory agencies
Qualification
Required
Minimum 3 years of related experience
Degree (BA, BS, or MS) in Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Life Science, or Health & Safety
Proficient with computer related office programs including Microsoft Office
Familiarity with the laboratory environment, handling of chemicals and hazardous gasses, use of standard lab equipment, safe handling and proper disposal of hazardous materials
Ability to respond to emergencies on campus during off hours, including weekends and holidays as part of the on-call emergency response team
Must have or obtain the 24 or 40-hour OSHA hazardous waste operations and emergency response training
Must be able to work independently and in a team environment
Good verbal and written communication skills
Able to work with different organizations within the academic community as well as outside regulatory agencies
This position requires completion of a pre-placement physical questionnaire, on-site physical, medical surveillance, CORI background check
Preferred
Certification designation in a health and safety or related discipline preferred (Certified Safety Professional, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, Certified Environmental Manager, Certified Industrial Hygienist, etc)
