The North Carolina Department of Revenue is dedicated to excellence in tax administration and is seeking a Motor Fuels Tax Auditor I for the Asheville Service Center. This role involves examining motor fuels tax returns and records to ensure compliance with tax laws and conducting audits for various tax agreements.

Responsibilities

Document and maintain audit status and communications within agency databases and systems, documentation logs, and audit templates
Obtain all necessary factual documentation to support audit findings
Plan work in an efficient manner ensuring deadlines are met
Prepare concise work papers and reports that clearly explain the findings resulting from completed examinations
Reconstruct and develop accounting methods that properly reflect fuel transactions in cases where either no records or inadequate records or accounting data is available
Develop MS Excel spreadsheets and MS Word documents
Perform accurate and complete audits of financial books and records of motor fuel suppliers, distributors, service stations and trucking companies registered with the Excise Tax Division (International Fuel Tax Agreement) and the Division of Motor Vehicles (International Registration Plan) to determine tax compliance with multiple tax schedules
Perform audits that will involve the interpretation and application of tax laws to ensure compliance with revenue laws and motor vehicle laws by employing professional auditing and accounting principles and practices in the examination of the taxpayers' records and tax reports
Confer with individuals, company officials and their representatives

Required

Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Economics, Accounting or related field with at least twelve semester hours of accounting from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
A transcript (either official or unofficial) must accompany the application to verify completion of the required twelve accounting hours
Basic knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code and Income Tax
Basic knowledge of auditing and accounting principles and practices
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word
A vehicle and a valid driver's license are required due to the travel requirements for this position
