Managing Director of Communications
California Farm Bureau is seeking a Managing Director of Communications to lead their public affairs and outreach strategies. This role involves managing the Communications Team and ensuring effective communication across various platforms to enhance the organization's visibility and reputation.

Responsibilities
Lead the development, execution and advancement of comprehensive communication including, public affairs, digital media, and outreach strategies that support the California Farm Bureau’s mission and organizational goals
Oversee day-to-day operations of the Communications Team, providing guidance, mentorship, performance management, and opportunities for staff development and growth
Ensure alignment of all communication efforts with organizational priorities, policy objectives, and brand standards
Collaborate with senior leadership and key staff to enhance the organization’s visibility and credibility across state and national media
Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with journalists, media outlets, and communication partners
Direct the development, drafting, and distribution of news releases; work proactively with subject matter experts to prepare timely, relevant communications on critical issues
Oversee responses to media inquiries, ensuring coordinated, accurate, and timely information from Farm Bureau officers, experts, and partner organizations
Lead and oversee media training for Farm Bureau leadership and staff to prepare them for interviews, public speaking, and media engagement
Provide strategic oversight of all social media platforms to ensure content is timely, engaging, and aligned with organizational messaging and member priorities
Oversee the ongoing development, accuracy, and strategic enhancement of the organization’s website, ensuring it serves as a central hub for members, media, and stakeholders
Develop, guide, and support the production of multimedia content, including podcasts, videos, and digital storytelling initiatives that expand the organization’s reach and visibility
Utilize analytics and performance data to measure impact and continuously refine digital strategies
Provide strategic oversight for the •Ag Alert• publication, collaborating closely with the Senior Editor to ensure key messages are accurate, timely, and effectively delivered
Ensure all published content reflects organizational priorities, supports policy initiatives, and resonates with members
Collaborate in the development of communication strategies for major organizational initiatives, campaigns, and policy efforts
Review and approve key communications to ensure quality, accuracy, clarity, and strategic alignment before final release
Support internal communications needs, helping maintain consistent messaging across departments
Provide communication materials, templates, and campaigns for use by County Farm Bureaus to support their local outreach, advocacy, and member engagement efforts
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Public Affairs, or related field; advanced degree preferred
Minimum of 8–10 years of progressive experience in communications, public affairs, or media relations, including management experience
Proven ability to craft and deliver strategic communications that influence public perception and support organizational goals
Demonstrated success in managing media relationships and responding to high-profile or sensitive media inquiries
Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills
Strong leadership, team development, and project management abilities
Preferred
Understanding of farming, ranching and agriculture
