Responsibilities

Operates safety equipment and uses safe work habits

Studies engineering drawings and blueprints to determine materials, requirements, and task sequences

Plans steel layout according to specifications

Lays out full scale drawings of structures, supports, and related equipment, following blueprints within specified tolerances

Moves parts safely into position; manually or with hoists or cranes

Lays out, positions, aligns, and secures parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers

Measures and marks steel for manipulation

Assembles fittings according to specifications by welding

Recognizes, sets up, and operates hand and power tools common to the welding trade

Positions, aligns, and welds parts to form complete structures, following blueprints and layout specifications, using machinery, welding torches, and hand tools

Verifies conformance of steel to specifications by measuring tapes or other measuring devices

Examines steel or workpieces to be processed to ensure that specifications are met

Cuts material using torches and other cutting equipment common to the welding trade
