Data Center Optical Engineer
NextGen, a Kelly Telecom Company, is seeking a Data Center Optical Engineer with hands-on experience in data center operations. The role involves providing technical support, including installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of optical and Ethernet cabling systems.
Responsibilities
Provide on-site break-fix support, including nights and weekends as required
Perform hardware troubleshooting, card-level replacements, and fault isolation
Execute remote hands tasks per MOPs, engineering documents, and vendor guidelines
Install, route, label, lace, and troubleshoot fiber and Ethernet cabling
Work with CAT5/CAT6, structured cabling, SM/MM fiber, RJ45, and LC connectors
Perform optical testing and turn-up for 10G/100G circuits
Use test equipment: OPM, Light Source, VFL, OTDR, BERT, RFC2544, Y.1564, iPerf
Install and maintain equipment through racking and stacking
Perform decommissioning and hardware removals per security protocols
Replace routers, switches, servers, and other network/IT equipment
Support AC/DC power systems, redundant feeds, and ATS
Conduct site audits, validate cable assignments, and document work
Oversee and coordinate third-party vendors on-site
Qualification
Required
3–5 years of experience in data center operations or similar environment
Hands-on experience with optical transport, cabling, installation, splicing and testing
Customer-facing experience required
Ability to work independently and follow detailed MOPs
Preferred
Team lead experience preferred
