Process Engineer
EvolvOptic is a leading supplier in precision-machined optical blanks, focusing on innovation and advanced technologies. The Process Engineer will support the manufacturing of large, high-precision optical components, optimizing workflows and ensuring quality in production processes.
Responsibilities
Develop, validate, and optimize manufacturing processes for large optical components (polishing, grinding, CNC figuring, diamond turning, coating preparation, bonding, etc.)
Establish process parameters to meet specifications
Conduct root-cause analysis to address manufacturing variability and quality issues
Support continuous-improvement initiatives and employ methods such as SPC, DOE, Six Sigma, or Lean principles
Provide technical support to production teams to ensure process stability and throughput targets
Create work instructions, process documentation, and operator training materials
Develop measurement strategies using interferometry, profilometry, surface roughness instruments, and coordinate metrology
Analyze measurement data to evaluate process capability, optical performance, and trends
Collaborate with metrology engineers to refine test setups and ensure measurement accuracy
Specify, install, and qualify new fabrication and metrology equipment. Establish and document SOPs for new equipment
Evaluate new materials, consumables, and tooling for process improvements
Work closely with design engineering, manufacturing, quality engineering, and program management teams
Support DFMA/DFM reviews and ensure manufacturability of new optical designs
Participate in customer interactions and technical presentations when required
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field, with more than 5 years of experience in optical fabrication; or a minimum of 10 years of relevant optical fabrication experience in lieu of a degree
Hands-on experience with optical processing equipment (grinding, polishing, figuring, coating prep)
Knowledge of optical metrology techniques (interferometry, profilometry, surface inspection)
Strong understanding of tolerancing, geometric dimensioning, and precision manufacturing principles
Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret process data using statistical methods
Preferred
Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field, with more than 10 years of experience in optical fabrication
Experience with large optics (≥300 mm diameter, or equivalent large-format optics)
Familiarity with ultra-low-expansion materials (ULE, Zerodur, CCZ, fused silica, etc)
Experience with CNC optical fabrication systems (e.g., IBF, MRF, Zeeko, etc)
Working knowledge of coatings, bonding, or optical assembly processes
Six Sigma certification or formal continuous-improvement training
Proficiency with CAD, CAM, and data-analysis tools (SolidWorks, MATLAB, Python, Minitab)
