RPG Programmer
Programmers.io is seeking an experienced RPG Developer with strong expertise in IBM i (AS/400, iSeries) platforms. The ideal candidate will lead modernization projects, ensuring business continuity and system performance while transforming legacy RPG applications into contemporary technologies.
Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain RPG applications on IBM i (AS/400, iSeries) systems
Lead or contribute to application modernization initiatives, including migration to modern languages, frameworks, and platforms
Work with business analysts and stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into technical solutions
Optimize and refactor existing RPG code to improve performance, maintainability, and scalability
Integrate RPG applications with APIs, web services, and modern databases as part of modernization efforts
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including architects, QA, and DevOps to ensure smooth delivery
Provide technical support, troubleshooting, and performance tuning of applications
Document processes, system designs, and modernization roadmaps
Qualification
Required
Strong hands-on experience in RPG (RPG III, RPG IV, ILE RPG, Free-format RPG) development
Solid knowledge of IBM i (AS/400, iSeries) systems, CL programming, and DB2 for i
Proven experience in modernization projects (e.g., converting legacy RPG to free-format RPG, integration with .NET/Java, APIs, or modernization tools)
Knowledge of SQL, stored procedures, and database optimization
Familiarity with tools and methodologies for legacy system modernization
Experience with web services (REST/SOAP) and integration
Understanding of Agile/Scrum methodologies
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in cross-functional teams
