Transportation Engineer I-II (TPD Section)

The Texas Department of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Engineer I or II to perform advanced and complex engineering work in various functional areas. The role involves assisting Project Managers, coordinating design efforts, and ensuring compliance with federal and state laws.

Government Administration

Responsibilities

Assists Project Managers related to resource assignments, schedules, scope, communication, quality, and procurement, while utilizing available resources and maintaining agency project objectives
Assists with design, computer operations and plan preparation
Assists with the development of design and project development reports, surveys and correspondence
Coordinates on design schematics
Coordinates with properties, utility companies, attorneys and governmental representatives to accurately depict the highway project's impact on adjacent properties
Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analysis, tests, and to provide technical support
Negotiates fees, explains scope of work and monitors consultant design contracts
Performs complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates, and contracts
Performs complex planning work such as plan review, calculations, and assisting in transportation planning studies

Required

Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS
Transportation Engineer I: 4 YEARS engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
Transportation Engineer II: 5 YEARS in engineering, transportation engineering or related engineering experience
Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle
Licensed Prof Engineer
If performing underwater bridge inspections: Must have Open Water Diver certification
For Bridge Inspection: Must have completed a comprehensive training course based on the Bridge Inspector's Training Manual or NICET Level III or IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within (1) year of date of hire
Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment
Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements
Hydrologic, hydraulic and geotechnical design activities and principles
Highway construction design applications
Construction phasing and sequencing
Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities
Design and plan preparation methods and requirements
Applying engineering principles, practices, and methods in job responsibilities
Performing basic design and drafting
Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility to meet short and long term deadlines
Leading, assigning, reviewing and monitoring the work of others
Establishing plans and setting objectives and goals that support overall business strategy/results; anticipating and adjusting for problems/roadblocks
Maintaining a safe working relationship
Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects 10 lbs. or more
Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
Standing prolonged periods of time
Talking expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
