Responsibilities

Tax Management - Responsible for tax activities within the payroll function. Ensures correct reporting of withholdings, timely filing of tax returns, and accuracy of tax provider results. Assists in year-end close activities and W2 preparation. Addresses tax-related inquiries from associates and regulatory agencies and provides ongoing relationship management of tax vendor
Accounting - Enters and maintains payroll information into the general ledger. May assist with end-to-end garnishment process to comply with the initiating agency's order and ongoing request for information. Recommends accounting improvements, develops necessary documentation, and drives implementation of recommended enhancements
Compliance - Ensures that payroll tax functions are compliant with all federal, state, and local tax regulations, engaging external legal counsel and management as needed. Resolves complex compliance matters and effectively communicates results to relevant tax authority
Project Support - Utilizes knowledge to support HR and Bank initiatives, including mergers and acquisitions. Develops and maintains audit tools, performs internal audits, and creates materials for internal auditors to ensure payroll tax information for projects is appropriately managed

Required

Bachelor's Degree and 4 years of experience in Payroll and either Tax or Accounting OR High School Diploma or GED and 8 years of experience in Payroll and either Tax or Accounting
License or Certification Type: Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) or Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) Certification

Preferred

Understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
Knowledge of Human Resources information and payroll systems
Proven experience in payroll tax and accounting with a bank or financial institution
Understanding of amended tax returns, Form W2C and prior-year adjustments
Knowledge and understanding of debits vs credits
Experience with reconciling, journal entry and balancing transactions
Peoplesoft system experience preferred
Knowledge of UKG software (or similar system)
Ability to problem solve and troubleshoot independently. Effective judgement and critical thinking
Must be detail oriented, able to multitask and function in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment with minimal oversight
Must be able to work independently on assigned duties while successfully collaborating in a team friendly environment
Strong organizational and time management skills are important as multi-tasking is essential
Must be adaptable and flexible to support change in regulatory environments
