Simulation Engineer Summer Intern

GM Performance Power Units is seeking a Mechanical Simulation Engineering Intern to support our Power Unit team in Concord, NC. In this internship, you will assist engineers with simulation tasks involving Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Multi-Body Dynamics (MBD), and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). You’ll gain hands-on exposure to world-class race engineering while contributing to the performance and reliability of high-level motorsport components.

Responsibilities

Assist with FEA, MBD, and CFD simulations on power-unit components under guidance from senior engineers
Help run basic static, thermal, or dynamic analyses
Prepare and clean geometry/meshes for simulation workflows
Support data organization, post-processing, and documentation of simulation results
Participate in correlation activities comparing simulation results to test data
Contribute to continuous-improvement efforts by updating templates, scripts, and standard operating procedures
Other duties as assigned

Required

Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
Coursework or interest in at least one of the following: Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Multi-Body Dynamics (MBD), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
Solid understanding of engineering fundamentals and problem-solving
Strong enthusiasm for motorsport and high-performance engineering
Exposure to internal combustion engines or rotating machinery
Basic understanding of fatigue, vibration, or heat-transfer concepts
Introductory programming/scripting skills (Python or MATLAB)
Hands-on motorsport, Formula SAE, Baja SAE, or similar project experience
Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
Strong communication and interpersonal abilities
Collaboration: Works effectively with internal teams and external partners
Adaptability: Responds effectively to evolving business needs and opportunities
Growth mindset
Ability to handle multiple projects independently
Ability to stand, walk, and move in diverse operational environments, including race shops, arenas, and commercial facilities
