Responsibilities
Assists and supports the attorneys defending workers’ compensation claims by opening claims, gathering information, investigating claims, determining appropriate action on new claims
Drafting motions, pleadings and discovery under an attorney’s supervision
Filing pleadings with the Division of Workers’ Compensation, Office of Administrative Courts or other courts as necessary
Reviewing, ordering, organizing and summarizing records
Preliminary research
Researching and confirming factual and procedural information
Organizing documents and assistance with preparing and coordinating witnesses and exhibits for hearings, and other trial preparation as necessary
Lead the Unit to stay current on applicable procedural rules, case law and will collect and assemble data for use in reviewing the unit’s effectiveness and for determining areas for possible change or improvement and other assignments as needed
Qualification
Required
Paralegal certificate obtained through either an American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal studies program or an accredited institution
One (1) year of paralegal experience
Two (2) years of work experience in a paralegal capacity which included conducting legal research, preparing drafts of legal documents and gathering and compiling data from legal references and resources will substitute for the required certificate
A Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school may substitute for the required certificate
Candidates possessing a foreign degree must submit a translation (evaluation) of their degree from an accredited institution, such as The National Association of Credential Evaluations Services in order to be given credit for the degree
Applicants must pass a thorough background investigation prior to appointment
Preferred
Recent work experience beyond one year of supporting attorneys in the workers' compensation area
Experience ordering, organizing and maintaining medical records electronically
Experience with ProLaw or a similar case management system
Experience organizing and managing multiple projects simultaneously including managing multiple hard deadlines
