Responsibilities

Provide safe travel for the traveling public using preservation techniques to extend the life of CDOT's assets through asset management and understanding asset conditions
Responsible for the planning, developing, scheduling, initiating, administering, and managing the maintenance and operations for building maintenance, culverts, bridge condition assessment and repair, noxious weeds, tracked excavator and hydro-vac projects, and avalanche mitigation/rock reduction
Determine the overall work plan and expectations for assigned area; maintain a broader perspective of maintenance activities, including safety, environmental awareness, resources, timing, budget, equipment, etc
Evaluate situations, interpret and initiate processes and procedures, and initiate changes, particularly in emergency conditions and unique situations or circumstances
Work closely with peer area supervisors, other CDOT units and outside agencies to plan for and respond to maintenance concerns
Act as Incident Commander for a variety of emergency situations
Perform all duties with a safety consciousness and the goal to provide exceptional internal and external customer service
Maintain operational readiness of equipment and personnel of 90% or greater for snow events and other emergencies; may be placed on call
Oversee large, complex maintenance projects that involve multiple patrols and provide technical guidance on activities performed
Forecast future needs and challenges, develop a plan to address, and communicate that plan with personnel
Train others and use computer software and CDOT programs to enter/approve data and information in order to complete email, paperwork, reports, work orders, time sheets, fuel logs, supply orders, meter readings, weekly updates, accident reports, etc
Supervise and manage personnel; conduct performance management; provide mentoring and training; safeguarding and handling sensitive employee information; communicate information between management and employees
Represent CDOT, educate and/or justify departmental positions on various issues through communications, meetings, project reviews, with cities, counties, community groups, etc.; respond to citizen complaints
Oversee and assist with avalanche missions and rockfall reduction operations, ensuring staff follow all special safety procedures and precautions

Required

At least four years of road/highway maintenance experience, two years of which included supervisory responsibilities
Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes that allows operation within Colorado at time of hire
You may be required to obtain a Hazardous Materials endorsement within 6 months to 1 year as a condition of appointment
You may be required to obtain a Type I Explosive Use Permit, with a construction endorsement for avalanche mitigation and rock reduction
May be required to pass a controlled substance test (i.e. drug test), and DOT physical through our medical provider
Essential Services Designation – Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services outside regular work hours to ensure health, safety, and welfare
May be required to live within thirty (30) minutes' driving time in normal weather conditions to be able to respond in a timely manner after notified to report to work
Must provide the supervisor with a telephone number where you can be reached for the purposes of responding to an emergency
New employees are required to attend two weeks of maintenance training in Golden, while veteran CDOT employees are required to attend training one week out of each year in Golden

Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position
Highest work/personal ethics and integrity
Experience in documentation and responding to accident and incident investigations
Comprehensive knowledge of the Emergency Response Guidelines, Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and supplement to set traffic control for road projects through different terrain, Colorado's Chain Law, Federal Motor Carriers Safety Regulation, Colorado Commercial Driver's License Manual, MLOS Standards, M & S Standards, and CDOT Policies and Procedures
Knowledge and comprehensive understanding of CDOT maintenance operations and budgets, including related policies, rules, and regulations
Dedication to CDOT's mission, goals, and overall objectives
Proven leadership and supervisory skills

Ability to partner with other CDOT stakeholders and staff, public and private agencies, professionals, consultants, and vendors with sensitivity to their needs and priorities
