Government Relations & Communications Intern (MASA)

The Michigan Association of Superintendents & Administrators (MASA) represents educational leaders across Michigan and works to advance high-quality public education through policy development, advocacy, and strategic communications. The Government Relations & Communications Intern will support advocacy, policy, and communications projects while gaining hands-on experience in legislative processes and media engagement.

Responsibilities

Monitor state legislation, committee hearings, and emerging policy trends shaping the future of K–12 education offering hands-on experience
Track relevant bills, prepare summaries, and translate complex policy language into clear, actionable information for internal staff, district leaders, and statewide partners
Support MASA’s internal legislative committees by preparing meeting materials, helping facilitate discussions, and assisting with follow-up tasks. An opportunity to collaborate directly with superintendents and education leaders across the state
Assist in scheduling legislative meetings and coordinating Capitol-facing advocacy efforts, including Lobby Days, member engagement campaigns, and statewide Calls to Action. An opportunity to develop hands-on advocacy skills and build meaningful relationships in Michigan government
Conduct background research and contribute to ongoing government relations projects, gaining real-world experience in how state-level advocacy shapes outcomes for schools and students
Assist in drafting MASA’s high-engagement member communications, including Monday Memo contributions and weekly legislative updates
Draft and edit content for press releases, public statements, op-eds, newsletters, and other public-facing materials
Support social media content development across MASA’s platforms, including copy, visuals, and engagement tracking
Help maintain MASA’s website by assisting with basic content updates, posting resources, and improving content organization
Assist with development of graphics and digital presentation assets using MASA templates and brand guidelines
Support communications needs at select MASA events by taking photos, gathering quotes, posting live updates, or assisting with materials
Monitor media mentions and provide quick-turn summaries that help inform MASA’s messaging
Help maintain consistency in MASA’s overall messaging and brand voice and assist with organizing MASA’s communications

Required

Current student pursuing a degree in public policy, political science, communications, public relations, education, or a related field, with a demonstrated interest in education policy
Strong writing skills, including the ability to translate complex or technical information into clear, concise, and accessible language
Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities
Genuine interest in state government, education policy, and/or public-sector communications
Ability to work independently, handle multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines
Basic familiarity with social media platforms and content creation

Preferred

Familiarity with the legislative process or Michigan politics
