Litigation Associate

Newport Williams is seeking an experienced Litigation Associate to manage cases from inception through resolution. The ideal candidate will have strong litigation skills and the ability to handle complex matters with minimal supervision, while actively engaging with clients and courts throughout the litigation process.

Responsibilities

Manage all phases of litigation, including:
Pre-suit investigation and case strategy
Pleadings, motions, and discovery
Depositions and expert coordination
Law and motion practice
Mediation, settlement negotiations, and trial preparation
Draft and argue substantive motions, including motions to dismiss, summary judgment, and discovery motions
Conduct and defend depositions of parties, experts, and fact witnesses
Prepare discovery requests and responses, including ESI
Participate in mediations, settlement conferences, and trials
Communicate directly with clients, opposing counsel, and courts
Develop case strategy and provide risk assessments and recommendations
Collaborate with partners, associates, and support staff to efficiently manage caseloads
Maintain accurate timekeeping and comply with firm procedures and deadlines

Required

Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school
Active and in good standing with the California State Bar
5+ years of litigation experience, with demonstrated experience handling cases from inception through resolution
Strong experience with: Discovery (written and depositions)
Strong experience with: Law and motion practice
Strong experience with: Mediation and settlement negotiations
Excellent legal research, writing, and analytical skills
Ability to manage multiple matters independently and meet deadlines
Strong communication and client-facing skills

Preferred

Trial or arbitration experience
Experience in one or more of the following practice areas: Commercial litigation
Experience in one or more of the following practice areas: Employment litigation
Experience in one or more of the following practice areas: Insurance defense
Experience in one or more of the following practice areas: Professional liability
Experience in one or more of the following practice areas: Business disputes
Experience mentoring junior associates
Familiarity with California state and federal courts
