Director of Fund Development

Urban League of Middle Tennessee (ULMT) is a historic civil rights and urban advocacy organization committed to empowering underserved communities. The Director of Fund Development will lead ULMT’s fundraising strategy and execution to meet annual philanthropic revenue goals, focusing on building relationships and securing support from various donors. This role requires strong leadership and collaboration with senior leaders to enhance community impact and revenue growth.

Responsibilities

Establish the vision, strategy, and annual work plan for all development activities
Direct and oversee fundraising plans and efforts, including annual giving, major gifts, grants, sponsorships, foundation support, corporate partnerships, and special events
Build and manage a diversified revenue portfolio with emphasis on unrestricted/private funding
Create fundraising projections and recommend annual fundraising goals to the President/CEO and Board
Develop and manage a year-round donor cultivation and solicitation calendar
Identify new revenue opportunities, including multi-year commitments and strategic partnerships
Build a major gifts pipeline and manage moves management from identification to solicitation to stewardship
Support and participate in donor meetings, solicitations, and stewardship led by the President/CEO and Board
Prepare donor briefings, talking points, proposals, and customized giving opportunities
Develop sponsorship packages and corporate engagement strategies tied to ULMT programs and signature events
Ensure donor recognition and stewardship plans are executed across channels (print, digital, events, reports)
Lead grant strategy, including prospecting, proposal development, submission, and reporting
Maintain a grant calendar with deadlines, deliverables, and compliance requirements
Coordinate grant narratives, budgets, and reporting with program leaders and the CFO
Ensure accurate tracking of restricted vs. unrestricted funds and funder requirements
Lead and oversee ULMT special events and fundraising campaigns as directed by the President/CEO
Own event fundraising targets, sponsor recruitment, donor engagement strategy, and post-event follow-up
Oversee timelines, vendor coordination, sponsor deliverables, and event-related donor stewardship
Prepare for and support monthly Board Fund Development Committee meetings
Work closely with the Board Fund Development Chair to set goals and drive accountability
Equip Board members with fundraising tools: scripts, call lists, sponsor packets, talking points, and training
Support Board fundraising activities, including donor outreach, relationship management, and cultivation
Maintain clean, accurate donor data and reporting within ULMT’s donor database/CRM
Create and track KPIs (pipeline, solicitations, renewals, conversion rates, sponsorship revenue, grant success rate)
Produce monthly/quarterly fundraising dashboards and updates for leadership and the Board
Ensure gift processing, acknowledgements, thank-you letters, pledges, and receipting are timely and accurate
Strengthen stewardship systems (thank-you cadence, impact reports, donor communications, renewal strategy)
Ensure development policies and procedures are documented and followed (gift acceptance, naming opportunities, donor privacy)
Supervise and develop development staff and/or contractors (as applicable)
Partner with Marketing/Communications to align donor messaging, impact storytelling, and branding
Collaborate with program teams to build fundable program narratives and measurable outcomes
Work with the CFO on the financial components of the strategic plan, ensuring sustainable growth

Required

Bachelor's degree in Business, Sales, Marketing, Communications, or related field
7+ years of proven nonprofit fundraising experience (major gifts, corporate giving, grants, events)
Demonstrated success meeting fundraising targets and building donor relationships
Supervisory experience and ability to lead with accountability and collaboration
Strong interpersonal skills: influencing, negotiation, relationship-building, and partnership development
Strong writing skills (donor communications, proposals, grants, and reports)
Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite) and ability to work in grant portals and CRMs
Proficiency using donor tracking/fund development software (examples: Little Green Light, CharityTracker, etc.)
Ability to build relationships with diverse individuals and groups
Highly organized, results-oriented, and comfortable managing multiple priorities and deadlines

Preferred

Master's degree in a related field
Experience working with Boards on fundraising and committee management
Experience building multi-year funding strategies and unrestricted revenue growth
Experience developing fundraising dashboards, reports, and pipeline analytics
