Molecular Genetics Lab Assistant (Day shift)

The Molecular Genetics Lab Assistant is responsible for supporting laboratory operations by preparing reagents, processing specimens, and maintaining equipment while ensuring compliance with laboratory standards.
Veterinary
Responsibilities
Picks up daily specimens from the accessioning department and sorts them for testing
Builds assay batches in Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
Performs DNA extraction
Performs DNA quantification and quality control
Monitors reagents and supplies inventory for all laboratory workstations, re-stocks as needed
Receives inventory shipments
Follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to prepare reagents, and perform reagent quality control and phase-in
Performs daily, weekly, and monthly preventive maintenance (PM) procedures and updates PM logs
Assists in resolving pending and problem sample lists
Manages hazardous waste disposal and waste labeling
Monitors Nitrogen gas tank levels and orders/receives new tanks as necessary
Cross-trains and develops knowledge of multiple specialties within department/lab
Assists Molecular Genetics Technicians as needed, and performs other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
High school diploma or equivalent
Prior lab experience and/or 2-, 3- or 4-year degree in Science-related field preferred
Laboratory skills, with experience setting up, running and operating lab instruments preferred but not required
Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology and Genetics procedures and equipment helpful
General science background

Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Communication skills, both verbal and written
Positive, can-do attitude
Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) as appropriate
Personal computer skills, including strong typing ability and proficient use of Microsoft Office
Extensive standing, phone, and computer use
Capable of standing continuously for up to 2 hours
Extend and reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers
Occasionally required to bend, kneel, stoop, or crouch
May be required to lift, move, and carry up to 50 lbs
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
Hearing ability to effectively communicate via the telephone and in person
Ability to communicate verbally on the phone and in person
Fluency in the English language
Extended hours may be needed
Laboratory environment with potential biohazards present
Normally receives general instructions on routine work, detailed instructions on new assignments
Work under close to moderate supervision with limited latitude for independent judgment
Potential for exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease in humans and use of potentially hazardous chemicals as defined by the National Hazard Communication Standards
