Responsibilities

Create and drive the strategic direction and operating model for payroll, time & attendance, and payroll compliance—establishing system‑wide policies, processes, and internal controls
Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership; ensure programs align to organizational strategy and deliver on Total Rewards goals
Partner with senior leaders in HR, Operations, Finance, Legal, and IT to update and implement policies that improve efficiency, effectiveness, and experience
Develop and govern project plans that increase automation, consistency, accuracy, and integrity of payroll systems and operations; evaluate and select technologies to meet business needs
Oversee audits and compliance programs to meet federal, state, and local regulations; drive operational excellence and robust internal controls
Coach, mentor, and develop a high‑performing, multi‑functional payroll team; build bench strength and leadership capability
Establish and manage vendor partnerships for payroll, payroll tax, and time & attendance (selection, negotiation, consolidation, performance management)
Collaborate on quarterly and year‑end planning and communications related to payroll and payroll tax reporting
Lead core HR responsibilities for the team (hiring, development, performance, compensation actions, engagement, and morale)
Develop operating and capital budgets; manage expenditures within approved objectives
Model Advocate Health’s Code of Ethical Conduct and ensure compliance across the function

Required

Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, or related field
~15 years of payroll leadership in large, complex organizations (75,000+ employees)
~5 years building and leading high‑performance payroll teams
Advanced knowledge of payroll operations, payroll tax processing & reporting, and payroll accounting
Demonstrated success leading enterprise‑scale transformation and change initiatives
Extensive packaged application knowledge (Workday, symplr)
Strong Excel skills; advanced analytics and reporting capability
Experience managing payroll/payroll tax vendors and contracts (ADP preferred)
Experience navigating mergers & acquisitions and integrating payroll across entities
Proven ability to lead large, geographically dispersed teams
Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills with the ability to influence at all levels
Knowledge of employment laws and regulations; Workday strongly preferred
