Programming.com is looking for a highly experienced Senior MySQL / Aurora DBA who specializes in diagnosing and optimizing database performance at scale. This role focuses on slow query analysis, indexing strategies, schema tuning, and executing zero-downtime upgrade strategies.

Responsibilities

Diagnose and optimize slow queries using profiling tools, execution plans, indexing strategies, and schema tuning
Identify and resolve database performance bottlenecks, including workload analysis, parameter tuning, and transaction/locking issues
Design and implement archiving and purging strategies to reduce data footprint while maintaining access and data integrity
Establish, validate, and improve operational best practices for monitoring, alerting, backup/restore, performance baselines, and capacity planning
Plan and execute Aurora MySQL engine upgrades, including blue/green deployments to minimize or eliminate downtime
Collaborate with engineering teams to guide best practices for schema design, query optimization, and performance improvements
Develop runbooks, document change plans, and ensure safe execution with rollback strategies
Support database reliability, availability, and scalability initiatives

Required

Strong MySQL performance tuning experience, including execution plans, query optimization, indexing, transactions, and locking
Deep diagnostics expertise with EXPLAIN / EXPLAIN ANALYZE, slow query logs, Performance Schema, and cloud monitoring tools
Proven experience operating AWS Aurora MySQL / RDS MySQL in production environments
Hands-on experience with Aurora features: blue/green deployments, parameter groups, replicas, failover behavior, maintenance windows
Strong understanding of data retention, archival, and partitioning strategies (partitioning, rollups, ETL-based archiving)
Experience creating and maintaining runbooks, documenting change processes, and executing safe change management with rollback plans
Excellent analytical skills and the ability to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders
