2026 Summer Intern - Clinical Pharmacology, Development Science

Responsibilities

Become familiar with Genentech’s workflow for quantitative systems pharmacology / toxicology (QSP/QST) model development and its contributions to clinical drug development key decision making
Build physiological-based pharmacokinetic pharmacodynamic (PBPK/PD) and QSP/QST models to enable translation of in vitro and preclinical pharmacology / toxicology data for informing the drug design and clinical dosing regimen
Implement models primarily in MATLAB (SimBiology toolbox) and associated toolboxes (e.g, Global optimization, Parallel Computing toolboxes) for model development, parameter estimation and virtual population simulation
Give a formal presentation at the end of the program and organize key research documents for archiving

Required

Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student)
Quantitative Systems Pharmacology, Quantitative Systems Toxicology, Computational Systems Biology, Mathematical Biology, Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and other related fields
The intern should have hands-on research project experience in constructing ODE-based models and solving ODE system equations using adequate toolboxes; ability for comprehensive literature search, generating modeling hypotheses, summarizing modeling insights to key answers for the original research questions
Demonstrated high proficiency in MATLAB programming and a strong understanding of immunology
Knowledge in biology and pharmacology, in vitro and in vivo experimental approaches to support drug development, experiences with SimBiology toolbox and other programming languages are required
