Accountant - Grand Rapids

West Michigan Works! is the administrative and fiscal agent for the Michigan Works! Agency. The Accountant performs professional accounting work utilizing governmental accounting, which includes monitoring government contracts and preparing financial statements and reports for internal and external users.

Non-profit Organization Management

Responsibilities

Review and edit contractor and administrative expenditures assuring compliance with contract and grant regulations, ACSET policies and procedures, sufficient budget authority, and accurate cost classification. Coordinate contract closeouts and maintain appropriate files
Maintain, analyze and prepare accounting records, journals, and general ledgers as required or assigned
Code and enter cash deposits and maintain appropriate files
Compile external reports as required by grantors (state, local, foundations)
Compile monthly internal financial reports with budget comparisons
Reconcile supportive services and trainings per the general ledger to the support data base and scholarship tracker
Prepare and distribute Accounts Receivable invoicing to ACSET customers on a monthly basis
Prepare monthly bank reconciliations
Perform internal audits of transactions, including a quarterly analysis of each program’s revenues, expenditures, assets, and liabilities. Advise program and accounting supervisors of the need for budget modification or adjusting journal entries
Meet with programmatic staff and/or managers as necessary to discuss fiscal reports/activity
Calculate quarterly infrastructure cost sharing with required partners. Prepare related journals and invoices
Calculate and maintain quarterly service center distribution codes
Maintain Fixed Asset listing and calculate depreciation on monthly basis
Calculate, record, and maintain monthly prepaid expenses
Calculate, record, and maintain monthly accrued expenses
Prepare reconciliations and worksheets for annual audit and assist with fiscal monitoring reviews
Actively participate in continuous quality improvement processes
Perform other duties as assigned

Required

The job requires knowledge normally acquired through a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or related field
Two to four years of experience in fund accounting in a non-profit or governmental organization, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
Computer skills necessary to effectively utilize word processing, database, and spreadsheet software applications
Mathematical ability to make moderately complex mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy
Ability to analyze and interpret financial records and other statistical data and ability to maintain complex financial accounting records and prepare reports from these records
Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate in both oral and written form
Communication and organizational skills that contribute to a quality work environment and the ability to work as a team
Planning and time management skills with the ability to adapt to changing priorities
Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, state and local agencies, and the general public
Mental ability to work on projects requiring concentration and attention to detail with frequent pressures related to meeting deadlines
Physical ability to frequently sit in one position for extended periods of time. May experience visual strain associated with the frequent and prolonged viewing of a computer screen
