STAFF EPIDEMIOLOGIST - Specialist
The City of Houston is looking for a Staff Epidemiologist - Specialist to manage and analyze public health data. The role involves supporting surveillance activities, developing reports and dashboards, and ensuring compliance with data governance and security requirements.

Responsibilities
Manage, analyze, and validate data from multiple sources to ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness for decision-making
Support surveillance activities by monitoring data flows, identifying data quality issues, and implementing improvements to enhance system performance
Develop and maintain routine and ad hoc reports, dashboards, and data visualizations for internal leadership, program staff, and external partners
Collaborate with internal stakeholders across programs to understand data needs, define requirements, and translate them into technical solutions
Coordinate with external partners, vendors, and state or federal agencies to support data exchange, interoperability, and reporting standards
Support implementation and optimization of electronic reporting systems and data integrations in alignment with public health informatics best practices
Ensure compliance with data governance, privacy, security, and regulatory requirements related to public health data
Document data workflows, system processes, and technical specifications to support continuity and knowledge sharing
Qualification
Required
Master's degree in Epidemiology or related biological, medical or medical research fields
Knowledge and experience using data analysis software (e.g. python, SAS, SQL)
Knowledge and experience using data visualizations software (e.g. Power BI)
No experience is required
Progressively responsible professional experience in public health or health care may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis

Preferred
PhD in Public Health or Master's degree in Public Health with emphasis in Epidemiology and two years of professional experience as Staff Epidemiologist
Two years of experience in Biostatistics/Statistics
Experience with data analysis in python, SQL, SAS
Experience in data visualization, setting objectives and goals, and tracking progress toward measures
Experience in building data collection tools and managing data
Experience in public health surveillance, informatics, or epidemiology
