Responsibilities
Assists in the installation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater system components
Assists with performing preventative maintenance on related equipment
Assists in the collection of water samples
Performs visual checks of facilities for equipment malfunctions and assists in repairing or correcting malfunctions
Maintains records and logs. Collects and records additional performance information
Assists in locating underground utilities
Performs building maintenance and janitorial duties
Assists with traffic safety devices and controls traffic at work sites
Responds to after-hours emergencies
Assists with special city events
May assist with snow removal operations
Promotes and supports the overall mission of the City by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with the public and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment
Other duties as assigned by Supervisor
Qualification
Required
High School Diploma/GED
One (1) year of maintenance/construction experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience preferred
Possession of, or ability to obtain within eighteen (18) months of date of hire, a Class I South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources Wastewater Collection Operator's Certification
Possession of, or ability to obtain within eighteen (18) months of date of hire, a South Dakota Class B CDL (Commercial Driver's License)
Preferred
Knowledge of the principles and practices used in the maintenance and operation of wastewater collection systems
Knowledge of the materials, methods, techniques, and terminology used in maintenance and repair of wastewater collection system infrastructure
Knowledge of basic math principles
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices including those associated with working in confined spaces
Knowledge of the principles and practices of modern wastewater treatment plant operations and maintenance
Knowledge of the principles and practices of the physical, biological, and chemical characteristics of wastewater including microbiological and bacteriological analyses
Knowledge of Federal, state, and local requirements and regulations pertaining to wastewater collection and treatment
Standard traffic laws and ordinances, safety regulations, principles, practices, safety data sheets (SDS) and equipment related to the work
Tools and equipment used in the trade
Ability to safely use and maintain hand and power tools related to the work
Ability to make accurate arithmetic calculations
Ability to read and interpret plans, maps, and instructions
Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both speech and writing and maintain effective working relationships
Ability to prepare basic records and reports of work performed
Ability to learn the operation of a wide variety of light and heavy motorized equipment
Ability to Contribute effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives, and activities
Ability to perform general maintenance work, individually or as a member of a crew, in various areas, depending upon the function
