Responsibilities
Applies electrical, electronic and mechanical principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing
Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype electromechanical systems
Applies extensive engineering technical expertise and possesses a background in electrical or mechanical engineering
Candidate will also be expected to communicate with junior engineers for the purposes of knowledge sharing and project assistance while also leading their own projects
The candidate will also be expected to communicate directly with the Navy and several non-engineering NNS departments
Therefore, the candidate must have excellent communication skills, both verbally and written
This team is tasked with design cognizance of power generation equipment used in aircraft carriers
This equipment contains several mechanical components including a turbine, valves, and pumps
The electrical components involve a generator and the control system to control the power output generated by the equipment
Additionally, the position will balance long term projects with short term emergent work
The candidate must have good problem-solving skills and be able quickly draw solutions to difficult shipboard and supplier production issues that are technically correct, cost effective, and complete
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience
Master's Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience
Ph.D. and 4 years of experience
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
Excellent communication skills, both verbally and written
Good problem-solving skills
Preferred
Candidate should be knowledgeable in electrical system integration and electrical component design
Knowledge of ship system integration and turbine generators is desirable
Knowledge in standard mechanical engineering principles such as fluid dynamics, materials, and thermodynamics is beneficial
