Peer Tutor, Study & Research Skills (On-Site)

University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) seeks accomplished UMGC students to work on-site as part-time peer tutors for undergraduate students at UMGC San Diego. Responsibilities

Promote a professional, respectful, and safe learning environment
Work more closely with English language learners
Provide support in study skills, organization skills, time management, reading comprehension, and basic research skills as a UMGC student peer tutor to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in UMGC courses
Provide clarification, examples, and tutorials that support the student in improving their study skills, problem-solving strategies, and authentic learning
Create, update, and present guidelines and other resources related to study skills, organization skills, time management, reading comprehension, and basic research skills for students
Refer students to specific subject tutors for questions about course concepts related to assigned readings, projects, or homework assignments
Refer students to the library for additional support in research and citation
Promote a professional, respectful, and safe learning environment
Work more closely with English language learners

Required

Be a current undergraduate or graduate student at UMGC with a minimum of two consecutive semesters completed not more than a year ago
A grade of 'A' in any version of PACE (for undergraduate candidates)
Able to demonstrate fair knowledge of good study skills, reading comprehension, and basic research skills
Fair knowledge in the use of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint to create content material (e.g., one-pagers and presentations)
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills in English
Ability to clearly communicate step-by-step instructions in verbal and written formats
Ability to work closely with students to ensure student success
Ability to work with diverse student populations

Preferred

Letter of recommendation or referral from a UMGC faculty member
Background in teaching, tutoring, and/or other type of learning support experience initiatives in a face-to-face environment

Benefits

Time Off: C1s that regularly work over 12 hours per week are eligible for limited sick and safe leave at the rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum accrual of 40 hours in a calendar year.
Health Coverage: Access to health care, medical with vision, dental, and prescription plans for both individuals and families, effective from the 1st of the month following your hire date. NOTE: CI employees are not eligible for the State of Maryland subsidized rates. CIs would be responsible for the total cost if enrolled.

Supplemental Retirement Plans: include 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), and various Roth options. The university does not provide matching funds.
