Senior Litigation Attorney
The Legal Aid Justice Center is a nationally recognized, non-profit organization that partners with low-income clients and communities of color in Virginia to fight for racial, social, and economic justice. They are seeking a Senior Litigation Attorney to support their litigation work, especially impact litigation, working closely with the director of litigation to develop and execute major litigation efforts across various programs.

Responsibilities
As assigned by the Director of Litigation, provide support to LAJC's litigation efforts. This may include:
Contributing to prelitigation fact investigations and legal research
Drafting, revising, or contributing to briefs, motions, memoranda, and other documents
From time to time, appearing in court to argue - motions, trial, etc
Interviewing clients, witnesses, experts, etc
Help to maintain relationships with cocounsel outside LAJC
Helping to design systems to strengthen LAJC's capacity for affirmative litigation
Participating in and sometimes leading litigation strategy meetings
Coaching or mentoring other attorneys and advocates about litigation
Promote racial equity across all dimensions, including within LAJC, by doing the following:
Helping to recruit, retain, and both support staff and leadership that reflect the racial composition of our community
Cultivating respect for the work and expanding resources for non-attorney staff that are disproportionately people of color
Creating spaces for staff to discuss issues of racial, gender, and all other issues of marginalization
Pushing for institutional and cultural changes by management, the board, and staff to further promote racial equity
Contribute to organizational health through working groups hiring committees, and other collaborative spaces building internal infrastructure of the organization
Provide support to administrative team relevant to immigration matters as needed
Identify or provide learning opportunities, relevant literature, and training opportunities relevant to litigation
Qualification
Required
Strong commitment to social, economic, and racial justice
At least three years of practice as an attorney, with the majority of that time working on litigation in state and especially federal courts
Strong written and oral advocacy skills
Membership in the Virginia State Bar, or eligibility and willingness to become a member of the VSB promptly - either by passing the bar exam, or meeting requirements to 'waive' into bar membership without taking the bar exam
An ability to balance and manage a variety of responsibilities
Preferred
At least 2 years of practice in one or more of the LAJC's areas of practice
Bringing affirmative litigation
Working on class action litigation
Experience coaching or mentoring others in litigation
Experience working for a public interest law firm, legal services organization, or other nonprofit, especially as an attorney or in a pro bono capacity
Proficiency in Spanish or another language commonly spoken by the communities we serve
