Field Service Engineer
Powerwell is a leading recruitment firm helping our clients discover top talent. They are recruiting for a Field Service Engineer for their client based in Arden, NC. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical foundation and hands-on experience with PLC-controlled systems, along with a troubleshooting mindset and strong communication skills to interact with clients and maintain professionalism in customer environments.
Responsibilities
Strong background in industrial automation, electrical/mechanical troubleshooting, or mechatronics
Hands-on experience with PLC-controlled systems (Siemens preferred; Rockwell acceptable)
Comfortable reading electrical schematics, network diagrams, and mechanical drawings
Working knowledge of VFDs and servo drives
Working knowledge of sensors (photo-eyes, encoders, proximity switches, safety devices)
Working knowledge of industrial networks (Profinet, Ethernet/IP, Profibus)
Working knowledge of conveyors, lifts, elevators, palletizers, shuttles, and AGVs/LGVs
Solid mechanical aptitude: chains, belts, gearboxes, bearings, alignment, and tolerances
Methodical, logic-driven problem solver who understands systems, not just individual components
Able to diagnose issues that cross mechanical, electrical, and software boundaries
Comfortable working under pressure in live production environments
Understands when to stabilize a system versus when to optimize or recommend design changes
Familiar with HMI/SCADA systems and interpreting alarms, faults, and logs
Basic understanding of PLC logic flow (even if not a programmer)
Comfortable interfacing with remote support tools, logs, backups, and version control practices
Understands the importance of configuration control and change management
Strong safety mindset (LOTO, PPE, and risk awareness around automated equipment)
Understands that automated warehouses are inherently hazardous environments
Maintains professionalism on customer sites, even during outages or escalations
Respects operational ownership while still providing clear technical leadership
Able to explain technical issues in plain language to operators and maintenance staff
Confident interacting with operators, maintenance technicians, maintenance leadership, and plant management
Documents work clearly, including service reports, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and recommendations
Supports knowledge transfer rather than a 'fix and leave' approach
Self-directed and comfortable working independently in the field
Curious and willing to learn complex, proprietary systems
Organized and disciplined with tools, parts, documentation, and follow-ups
Accepts travel, irregular hours, and on-call support as part of the role
Qualification

3–7+ years of experience in automation service
3–7+ years of experience in controls technician roles
3–7+ years of experience in material handling or manufacturing environments
Preferred
Experience in food & beverage, CPG, or high-throughput logistics environments is a strong plus
