Responsibilities
Design and develop scalable, secure, and high-performing mainframe solutions aligned with business objectives and enterprise architecture standards
Conduct architectural assessments and translate business and system requirements into detailed mainframe solution designs
Define and maintain architecture patterns, standards, and guidelines for mainframe applications
Lead the design and development of batch and online applications using COBOL, JCL, DB2, and related mainframe components
Ensure seamless integration of mainframe applications with distributed systems, APIs, middleware, and data platforms
Support and guide teams in implementing modernization initiatives such as service enablement, APIs, and integration with cloud or distributed environments
Analyze, refactor, and optimize existing mainframe applications to improve performance, reliability, and maintainability
Lead performance tuning activities across programs, database access, and batch processes
Monitor mainframe environments and proactively troubleshoot issues to reduce downtime and improve system stability
Plan and oversee the migration of legacy systems to modernized mainframe or hybrid architectures, ensuring minimal business disruption
Evaluate modernization approaches (rehost, refactor, re-engineer, etc.) and recommend best-fit strategies and tools
Collaborate with infrastructure and platform teams to support environment upgrades and technology refresh initiatives
Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and coaching to developers, analysts, and other team members
Lead code and design reviews to ensure adherence to best practices, standards, and security guidelines
Promote and implement DevOps/automation practices (build, deploy, test automation) within mainframe delivery teams
Work closely with product owners, business analysts, and business stakeholders to understand requirements and propose effective technical solutions
Communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders in a clear and concise manner
Participate in roadmap planning, estimation, and prioritization of mainframe-related initiatives
Ensure compliance with industry standards, security policies, and regulatory requirements in all mainframe-related activities
Evaluate and recommend tools, utilities, and technologies that improve development productivity and operational efficiency
Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation for architectures, designs, interfaces, and processes
Qualification
Required
12–15 years of experience in mainframe application development and architecture
Strong hands-on experience with: COBOL, JCL, DB2, VSAM and other mainframe data access methods
Solid understanding of: Batch and online (transactional) processing, Mainframe performance tuning and capacity considerations, Job scheduling and workload automation tools
Proven experience designing and implementing complex mainframe solutions in large, mission-critical environments
Experience integrating mainframe applications with distributed systems (e.g., APIs, MQ, web services)
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills in mainframe environments
Demonstrated experience leading technical teams, mentoring developers, and driving best practices
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
Preferred
Experience working in retail / grocery or similar high-volume transactional domains
Exposure to tools such as CICS, IMS, MQ, Xpeditor, Abend-AID, ISPW/Endevor or similar change management tools
Experience with mainframe modernization initiatives (APIs, microservices integration, cloud connectivity)
Familiarity with DevOps concepts and CI/CD pipelines in a mainframe context
Knowledge of security and compliance standards relevant to enterprise environments
