Responsibilities
Operates mechanical cage wash units, bulk steam sterilizers, decontamination equipment and material-transfer vacuum systems according to standard operating procedures and manufacturer instructions
Develops and implements standard operating procedures to provide a safe environment and quality supplies
Documents, organizes and maintains preventative maintenance records and manufacturer specification materials
Processes all animal cage components & related equipment through mechanical cage, bottle, rack or tunnel washers
Responsible for maintaining adequate levels of sanitization chemicals
Oversight of bulk bedding silos
Maintains fixed equipment filters, air-handler and cage-top filters
Performs quality assurance monitoring and record-keeping ensuring proper sanitation
Must have an in-depth understanding of equipment maintenance, washing equipment operation and safety components, cleaning and sterilization cycles
Ensures compliance with required regulations and consistently follows program and institutional procedures and policies
Must be able to troubleshoot and report mechanical failures immediately to management
Other related duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
High School diploma or GED
at least 2 years employed in a vivarium operations position
Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with facilities and research staff as well as vendors
Weekend and holiday work may be required
Must work well independently and as a cross-functional team-member
This position qualifies as an essential employee
Employment is conditional upon the satisfactory completion of an occupational health assessment for working with laboratory animals
Must have the ability to lift 50 lbs and push/pull up to 300lbs
