Tool & Die Assistant Manager

MS Companies is a third-party recruiting partner seeking a highly skilled Tool & Die Assistant Manager for a major automotive manufacturer in Springfield, OH. The role involves overseeing Tool Room operations, supporting Toolmakers, and driving proactive problem-solving to enhance tooling processes and departmental strategy.

Responsibilities

Supervise and direct the Assistant Tool & Die Manager and Tool & Die Office Coordinator
Ensure repair ownership and follow-up any time a tool returns to the press
Provide advanced support on complex die issues and guide Toolmakers through troubleshooting
Maintain 1.5–2 hour daily overlap with 2nd shift for communication, assignments, and coordination
Prepare KPI reports, A3 documentation, training plans, expense budgets, and investment plans
Develop 3–5 year planning for staffing, growth, and department capability improvement
Enforce safety, quality, and productivity standards; identify and correct unsafe conditions
Support hiring, evaluating, and developing staff, including 8 international helper employees

Required

Minimum 10 years of supervisory experience in a Tool & Die or closely related environment
High School Diploma or GED; Trade School or Apprenticeship strongly preferred
Proven hands-on knowledge of Tool & Die operations, stamping tools, repair processes, and press support
Strong leadership skills with ability to hold teams accountable, direct priorities, and drive urgency
Demonstrated ability to solve practical and abstract problems in fast-paced manufacturing
Ability to communicate clearly, read/interpret technical documents, and prepare KPIs/A3 reports
Proficient in Microsoft Office, data entry, and basic software tools; familiarity with AutoCAD (2D)
Must be able to work flexible hours, including occasional 2nd/3rd shift overlap or limited weekends for emergencies

Preferred

Experience developing capital investment plans or influencing tooling-related budgets
Background supporting cross-cultural teams or environments using international supplemental labor
Exposure to Lean, Root Cause Analysis, or structured problem-solving tools (A3, 5 Why, etc.)
Prior experience preparing training plans, manning plans, or long-range departmental strategies
Ability to develop and present metrics, dashboards, or structured reports to leadership
