Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine is currently seeking a chairperson to support the mission, vision and values of Rowan-Virtua SOM. The candidate will provide leadership, direction and development to all teaching, clinical, research, community, and support activities within the Department of Pediatrics.

Responsibilities
Effectively leads the Department toward excellence in the conduct of teaching, research, patient care delivery, administrative services and community activities
Communicates the mission, vision and values of the University, School and Department to faculty and staff through personal example and commitment; helps to turn the vision and mission into reality
Understands the needs and requirements of the department and effectively communicates and advocates for those with the Dean and Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs
Motivates and develops faculty and staff by accurately assessing and addressing their strengths, weaknesses and developmental needs. Clearly defines expectations and provides specific and regular feedback on performance and personal development, grooms faculty and staff for promotion
Demonstrates principled leadership and sound professional, academic and business ethics, creates an environment of cooperation and trust
Champions new initiatives, assuming the risk and responsibility for the Department. Builds and maintains effective relationships with clinical and academic partners
Asserts own ideas and encourages others to do the same; gains faculty and staff support and commitment, motivates people to take action
Acts professionally and responsibly at all times, within and outside of the University, contributing to a positive image of the Department, the School and the University. When appropriate, serves as a spokesperson for the School and affiliated partners to promote clinical care, research and teaching programs
Adjusts to shifting priorities, ambiguity and rapid change; demonstrates flexibility
Oversees provision and management of direct patient care at ambulatory, acute care, long-term care and home setting, working closely with Medical Directors to achieve desired result
Works closely with other Department Chairs of the School to achieve common goals that improve the Faculty Practice Plan’s quality, patient safety, service delivery and financial performance
Develops and grows clinical services of the Department, in coordination with the Faculty Practice Plan to meet the needs of the changing consumer market
Monitors faculty clinical practice patterns, and adherence to meeting all requirements of local, state and federal accrediting agencies to ensure ethical practice standards, consistency with billing and audit requirements, and continuity of patient care
Meets budgetary requirements regarding quality and safety expectations set forth for the department of psychiatry
Ensures adequate faculty effort, oversight, and support for programs of undergraduate and graduate medical education
Takes appropriate steps to maintain full accreditation of training programs in geriatrics
Responsible for the clinical education and training of students, residents and fellows; providing guidance to faculty and staff serving as clinician educators, course directors and program coordinators for training in geriatric education
Encourages and supports faculty pursuit of research and scholarly activity, consistent with their other duties
Provides a departmental vision and environment to promote research and increase research funding
Promotes cross departmental and cross school research projects
Participates in strategic planning opportunities for expansion. Fosters opportunities for contractual relationships with potential partners to advance the Institute and the school
Considers a broad range of internal and external factors when making decisions, including information about the community, the market and competitors
Strategically re-evaluates interface between education, clinical practice, research to strategically address new opportunities for change or expansion that will benefit the overall mission of the department and the school
Emphasizes the need to deliver quality services; defines standards for quality and evaluates processes against these standards to improve organizational performance; demonstrates commitment to quality improvement initiatives
Identifies constituents’ needs and takes action to meet them; continually searches for ways to increase satisfaction among the School’s and University’s constituents (students, faculty, patients, staff, communities)
Supports the employment, education and development of minorities and protected classes; makes decisions based on the principles of Affirmative Action and Equal Employment Opportunity
Maintains professional, administrative and academic currency; understands the issues relative to the mission and goals of the department or office, School and University
Develops appropriate budget for the Department, monitors and manages the budget to ensure the attainment of fiscal targets. Regularly reviews budgets and fiscal targets with the departmental administrator and budget analyst
Oversees administration of grant-funded programs, often assuming role of Project Director on grants or extramurally funded projects as appropriate
Directs and oversees grant-writing efforts, providing strategic direction and conceptualization of local, state and federal grants and other extramural funding opportunities that have the potential to advance the reputation of the University, the school and the Institute
Directs and facilitates the recruitment, retention and professional development of high quality faculty and staff and deploys them strategically to meet the needs of our community and affiliated partners
Creates an atmosphere in which information is shared effectively both vertically and laterally; encourages open expression and exchange of ideas and opinions
Serves, as appointed, on key committees and task forces within the School, University, affiliated hospitals and other groups
Conducts all performance appraisals on time; evaluates performance based on outcomes of previously established goals and objectives
Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Dean
Qualification
Required
D.O. or M.D. degree
AOA or ABMS Board Certified in Pediatrics
Prior experience in management roles
Academic and professional experience necessary to qualify at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor
Demonstrate and provide examples of leadership (i.e. previous departmental leadership positions, involvement in regional/national organizations etc.)
Teambuilding (i.e. previous successes, experience, interpersonal skills)
Academic strength (i.e. teaching experience, research experience, publications)
Clinical strength (peer recognition, reputation, patient satisfaction)
Management strength (coaching, type and quality of management experience, advanced degree with experience)
Valid NJ Medical License
