Legal Writing Instructor

The University of South Carolina Joseph F. Rice School of Law is seeking to hire a Legal Writing Instructor to teach Legal Research, Analysis & Writing to first year law students to begin August 2026. This role involves teaching courses to approximately 40 students each year and participating in faculty governance and service responsibilities.

Responsibilities

Teach Legal Research, Analysis and Writing I & II to approximately 40 students each year
Work closely with a reference librarian who will team-teach the course
May alternatively teach, as needed, upper-level writing courses
Be assigned some faculty governance and service responsibilities
May have the opportunity to earn a summer stipend by taking on additional responsibilities, such as teaching an elective course in Maymester or the Summer semester

Required

Applicants must have a J.D. degree
Applicants must also have at least two years of experience in law practice or a judicial clerkship

Preferred

The ideal candidate should also have a record of outstanding academic achievement in law school
Excellent analytical, research, writing, and interpersonal skills; and teaching or tutoring experience
Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to teaching legal writing
