The Texas Department Of Criminal Justice is seeking an Accountant II for their Business and Finance Division. The role involves performing routine accounting work, maintaining and balancing financial statements, and providing technical assistance to staff while ensuring compliance with legal and departmental standards.

Government Administration

Responsibilities

Classifies, codes, posts, and balances financial accounting documents and records in an automated system; tracks and monitors documents in progress through completion; and reviews and audits completed financial records for accuracy and conformance with legal and departmental standards, policies, procedures, and regulations
Audits accounting controls and records of financial transactions; and researches and reconciles discrepancies and reports findings
Compiles and analyzes financial data; prepares financial statements, reports, cost data, and budget items; and prepares and maintains financial records and files to include automated information systems
Provides technical assistance to departmental and agency staff performing accounting transactions; and recommends improvements, adaptations, and revisions to the accounting system and accompanying procedures
Performs a variety of marginal duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed

Required

Graduation from an accredited senior high school or equivalent or GED
Two years full-time, wage-earning accounting, accounting clerical, auditing, bookkeeping, statistical analysis, or financial experience. Fifteen semester hours from a college or university accredited by an organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education accreditation (CHEA) or by the United States Department of Education (USDE) may be substituted for each six months of experience
Knowledge of automated financial information systems
Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures affecting the maintenance of accounting records and automated accounting systems
Skill to communicate ideas and instructions clearly and concisely
Skill to coordinate with other staff, departments, officials, agencies, organizations, and the public
Skill to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
Skill in problem-solving techniques
Skill in the use of computers and related equipment in a stand-alone or local area network environment
Skill to prepare and maintain complex records and files in an automated system
Skill in the electronic transmission of communications
Skill to analyze, consolidate, and interpret financial data
Skill to research and resolve discrepancies and inquiries

Preferred

Experience in the use of Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent to include word processing, spreadsheet, database, or presentation software programs
Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, rules, regulations, and statutes
Knowledge of agency and departmental organizational structure, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
Skill in the use of Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent to include word processing, spreadsheet, database, or presentation software programs
