FIREFIGHTER (HAZMAT TECHNICIAN/BASIC LIFE SUPPORT)

The Department of the Air Force is seeking a Firefighter (Hazardous Materials Technician/Basic Life Support) at JB McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. The primary purpose of this position is to engage in airfield and structural firefighting and crash-rescue operations, while performing hazard assessments and operating firefighting vehicles.

Responsibilities

Performs hazard and risk assessment and conducts a complete incident analysis; performs Basic Life Support
Drives and operates firefighting vehicles, such as pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, and Airport Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicles
Performs crash-rescue and firefighting duties involving air traffic or support operations where hazardous conditions are such that the expectancy for fire is high and potential for becoming destructive is great
Performs structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities, which may include large multistoried buildings, industrial areas, and/or base storage facilities; maintains firefighting equipment and fire station facilities
Complies with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures and performs work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work environment

Employee must participate in a mandatory physical fitness program
Employee is required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management
The employee is required to work a 72 hour week on a 24 hour on/24 hour off basis which includes weekends and holidays
This is a Testing Designated Position. The employee is subject to random drug testing
This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program
The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license is required
Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth
Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance
This position requires a pre-employment physical
Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-06, or equivalent in other pay systems

Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible
Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements
Certification requirements for this position are: Airport Firefighter (includes Firefighter I, II), HAZMAT Awareness, HAZMAT Operations, HAZMAT Technician, Apparatus Driver Operator - Pumper, Apparatus Driver Operator - Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF)
Must possess State or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) Basic Life Support (EMT-B) certification, if the applicant holds only a State certification then they must obtain NREMT certification within 24 months from employment date
Apparatus Driver Operator - Aerial and Apparatus Driver Operator - Mobile Water Supply (MWS) must obtain certifications within 24 months of employment date
