Intern, State Affairs - Pennsylvania
Humane World for Animals, a global leader in animal advocacy and protection, is seeking a State Affairs Intern in Pennsylvania. The intern will gain experience in animal protection issues and policy while assisting the State Director with legislative priorities and grassroots outreach efforts.

Responsibilities
Help the State Director advance state and local legislative priorities
Build contacts with activist coalitions and animal welfare groups in the state; work with grassroots supporters
Help implement key legislative and campaign strategies by coordinating with campaign and other Humane World for Animals staff, at the state director’s direction
Assist with state and local legislation through lobbying, written communications, outreach, etc
Draft substantive written materials, including testimony, white papers, fact sheets, and other documents as needed
Perform outreach to animal-related organizations within the state to assist with relationship building; develop/update contact list
Assist the state director in volunteer outreach projects for campaigns
Assist with Humane Lobby Day and Humane 101s throughout the state
Table at various events to promote Humane World for Animals
Assist with grassroots advocacy campaigns including participating in phone banking (utilizing a prescribed phone list and script to make phone calls to the public and Humane World for Animals members regarding animal protection issues) and coordinating other grassroots outreach campaigns
Assist with online research and commentary, letter writing (letters to the editor, writing to local businesses, etc.), and working with social media
Assist with administrative tasks such as updating and preparing Excel spreadsheets, database entry (such as creating master list of all the shelters/humane societies/animal control throughout the state), assistance with mailings, events-submission to online calendars and weekly newspapers, etc
Provide written reports on progression of work in a timely manner
Complete an internal course designed to introduce the organization and our work
Follow guidelines and policies of Humane World for Animals and State Affairs department, and follow directions given by staff
Qualification
Required
Authorized to work in the United States
Meets one of the following: Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited college or university
High school or accredited college or university graduate who graduated within the last two years
Service member with an honorable discharge within two years of leaving the military
Able to meet the requirements outlined in the role's position description
Strong reading, writing, critical thinking, research, attention to detail, and editing skills
Eagerness to learn about a variety of animal protection issues
Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and database-entry; general knowledge of social media
Demonstrate flexibility and show initiative on a variety of projects; strong work ethic
Able to think creatively, in a solution-oriented way
Willingness to learn from and work closely with the State Director on various campaigns and issues
Eagerness to work independently and take direction from State Director
Able to use discretion, keeping in mind the confidential nature of some aspects of the work
Able to work well independently and as a member of a team, with a high level of accountability and integrity
Able to tactfully deal with challenging questions or opposing viewpoints from the public
Maintain professionalism in attitude and appearance
Must have access to a computer with Microsoft Word and access to the Internet
