AI Engineer / Applied AI Consultant (Healthcare Automation)
Saviance is seeking an experienced AI Engineer / Applied AI Consultant to design and implement an end-to-end intelligent automation solution for healthcare. The role focuses on building a production-grade AI pipeline that integrates OCR and LLM-based document understanding to streamline referral processing within Epic EMR.

Responsibilities
Design and implement AI models to ingest and analyze incoming fax documents
Automatically classify documents as medical referrals vs non-relevant/junk faxes
Handle low-quality scans, handwritten text, and variable fax formats
Build OCR + LLM-based agents to interpret referral content, including:
Referral intent and urgency
Department / specialty routing
Patient demographics and identifiers
Ordering provider and clinical context
Apply prompt engineering, validation logic, and confidence scoring to ensure accuracy
Parse extracted data into structured formats aligned with Epic order workflows
Map unstructured referral data to Epic order forms, patient records, and workflows
Implement data normalization, error handling, and exception routing
Design and implement interfaces with Epic EMR, leveraging:
FHIR APIs (preferred)
HL7 / Epic Interconnect where applicable
Enable automated data entry into Epic with auditability and compliance controls
Collaborate with Epic analysts and clinical stakeholders on workflow alignment
Ensure solutions meet HIPAA, PHI security, and healthcare compliance requirements
Implement monitoring, logging, and human-in-the-loop fallback mechanisms
Optimize for scalability, performance, and reliability in a clinical environment
Qualification
Required
Strong experience with Python (primary) and modern AI/ML frameworks
Hands-on experience with OCR technologies (Tesseract, AWS Textract, Azure Form Recognizer, Google Vision, etc.)
Practical experience using LLMs for document understanding (OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.)
Experience building LLM agents, prompt workflows, and extraction pipelines
Experience integrating with Epic EMR (FHIR strongly preferred)
Solid understanding of FHIR resources (Patient, ServiceRequest, Encounter, etc.)
Familiarity with HL7, healthcare workflows, and clinical data models
Experience handling PHI and regulated healthcare environments
Experience designing end-to-end automation pipelines
API development and system integration experience
Cloud experience (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
Ability to move quickly from POC to production
Preferred
Prior experience automating fax-based workflows in healthcare
Experience with human-in-the-loop AI systems
Exposure to Epic referral, intake, or order workflows
Knowledge of MLOps, monitoring, and model lifecycle management
