Responsibilities
Design and implement a modern data pipeline that makes adding new data sources straightforward
Create transformation logic that standardizes data from multiple platforms into common, reusable models
Establish data quality standards and implement monitoring to catch issues early
Set up and maintain our data warehouse architecture
Drive the Vision
Own the technical roadmap for our data infrastructure
Make architectural decisions about tools, patterns, and best practices
Document systems and create patterns that others can follow as the team grows
Balance "perfect" with "pragmatic" - ship solutions that work while building for the future
Enable the Business; Work with our reporting and analytics team to understand their needs
Build data models that make Tableau reporting intuitive and fast
Partner with stakeholders across sales, marketing, and operations to ensure data serves their needs
Translate business questions into data requirements
Qualification
Required
SQL mastery - you think in SQL and can write complex transformations efficiently
dbt experience - you've built and maintained dbt projects in production
Data modeling - you understand dimensional modeling, normalization, and how to structure data for analytics
Python or similar scripting - for automation, API integrations, and data manipulation
PostgreSQL or similar relational databases - practical experience with analytics on traditional databases
Experience choosing cost-effective solutions over enterprise tools when appropriate
Experience with modern ingestion tools (Fivetran, Airbyte, Stitch)
Orchestration tools (Airflow, Dagster, Prefect)
Version control and CI/CD practices for analytics code
Experience with Tableau or similar BI tools
You've built data systems from scratch - not just maintained them at a large company
You're comfortable with ambiguity - we need someone who can figure things out, not just execute a playbook
You care about the business context - data engineering isn't just plumbing; it enables decisions
You communicate well with non-technical people - you'll be working with everyone from sales to ops
You're pragmatic - you know when to use off-the-shelf tools vs. build custom solutions
You're open to AI-assisted development - you're comfortable using or learning AI coding tools (like Claude, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) to work more efficiently, even if you haven't used them yet
