ASSISTANT PEOPLE’S COUNSEL I - IV
The Maryland Office of People’s Counsel is an independent State agency advocating for the economic and environmental interests of residential consumers of public utility services. The Assistant People’s Counsel is responsible for representing consumers in regulatory matters, conducting investigations, and participating in legal proceedings related to public utilities.

Responsibilities
Identifying, initiating, coordinating, and participating in matters before state regulatory agencies
Conducting investigations and initiating proceedings before the Maryland Public Service Commission and other agencies
Litigating public utility matters and holding utilities accountable for performance
Monitoring the utility industry and advocating for consumer protection against unjust rate increases
Reviewing, tracking, and analyzing proposed legislation and assisting in drafting bill testimony and amendments
Participating in state and national-level policy initiatives regarding consumer issues and new technologies
Qualification
Required
A Juris Doctor degree or an equivalent degree from an accredited school of law
Employees in this classification must be a member of the Bar of any state or federal jurisdiction at the time of appointment and must become a member of the Maryland Bar within 18 months of appointment
Preferred
Admission to the Maryland Bar
Consumer protection and administrative litigation experience is a plus
Background in or familiarity with utility regulation, economics, engineering, or accounting will enhance the application
