Safety Compliance Officer

The New Mexico Department of Health is seeking a Safety Compliance Officer to support the oversight of the hospitals' Safety Management Programs. The role involves ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations, assisting in promoting a safe environment, and coordinating safety inspections and training.

Responsibilities

Assist with coordination and oversight of the organization's safety management programs which include Safety & Security, Hazardous Materials & Waste, Medical Equipment, Fire Safety, Life Safety, Utility Management and Emergency Preparedness
Support departmental communication efforts by effectively creating clear and concise correspondence, creating basic reports, generating emails, and by utilizing spreadsheets to track inventories and gather data
Provide support by creating internal purchase requisitions utilizing Adobe Acrobat to procure preventative maintenance services, repairs and order equipment and supplies
Conduct environmental rounds and document identified deficiencies. Track those deficiencies and provide timely closeouts for all issues
Will assist in the coordination of required inspections. This includes scheduling and conducting inspections, compiling reports, coordinating corrective actions and follow-ups, and documenting all efforts to ensure documentation is ready for licensing and accreditation review
Provide safety training as it relates to the safety management program, conduct fire drills, and participates in emergency management drills

Required

Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, engineering, physical science, natural science, environmental science, social science, criminology, or closely related field and two (2) years of related work experience
Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience
Must possess a current driver's license and defensive driving certificate
Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing
Employment is subject to nationwide criminal background checks and is conditional pending results
Must successfully complete post offer pre-employment criminal records background check
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license
Successful completion of the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA)
Employment is subject to nationwide background search pursuant to NM Caregivers Criminal Screening Act and is conditional pending results

Preferred

Experience working with healthcare facility codes
Experience with loss and risk management practices
Knowledge of life safety code, fire safety, hazardous materials and solid waste regulations
Experience with medical equipment safety
Familiarity with FEMA and hospital emergency management systems
Knowledge of environmental safety, OSHA regulations, ADA regulations and Joint Commission standards
Strong communication, analytical thinking and interpersonal skills
Advanced computer proficiency
