The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Engineering Associate I to assist with monitoring construction projects for compliance with specific plans and standards. The role involves project inspection duties, managing contract maintenance projects, and ensuring clear communication between contractors and the department.

Civil Engineering

Responsibilities

Assists with monitoring construction projects for compliance with project specific plans, SCDOT Standard Specifications for Highway Construction and SCDOT Standard Drawings for Road Construction
Assists with performing project inspection duties as needed; including monitoring progress of assigned projects by maintaining daily field notes, ensuring the quality of work performed, certify contractor adherence to SCDOT specifications and standards and ensures clear communication between contractor and SCDOT
Assists with monitoring project QA/QC and erosion control as per specific SCDOT certification and CEPSCI certification
Assists with monitoring traffic control activities for compliance with approved plans or standard drawings
Assists with managing contract maintenance projects, in accordance with the same standards and specifications followed on standard construction projects
Assists with performing project closeout duties required by supervisor or dictated by contract requirements
Assists with project engineers with coordinating of inspectors to be sure inspection staff is present on construction projects at all times
Assists with project managing duties, including liaison for utilities and contractors, makes initial site inspection to identify potential conflicts, ensures proper paperwork is obtained from utilities and monitors progress of any utility relocations
Performs other related duties as assigned

Required

A bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management; or an approved acceptable equivalence
Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license
Must be able to trek over rough terrain, stand for long periods of time while performing repetitive duties
Vision and hearing, are important working adjacent to traffic
This position may require travel
This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling
This position requires driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards
May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies
This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise
Normal work week is 40 hours, but some overtime will be necessary
Work is performed outside in all types of weather
Must be able to act as an essential employee during emergency situations and assist in evacuation procedures
