Senior LevelActual Education is seeking a Founding AI Engineer for a specially funded project focusing on AI and education. This role involves leading the design, development, and deployment of production-grade LLM and autonomous agent systems, requiring hands-on experience in building AI systems.

Responsibilities
Architect, build, and deploy LLM-powered and agent-based systems end-to-end
Lead model selection, fine-tuning, evaluation, and optimization for real-world use cases
Design scalable, reliable AI system architectures (inference, orchestration, monitoring)
Develop autonomous agents capable of executing complex, multi-step tasks
Collaborate with product and engineering leadership to translate business goals into AI solutions
Stay at the frontier of LLMs, agents, and AI infrastructure and apply what matters in production
Own performance, cost, reliability, and safety tradeoffs across AI systems
Qualification
Required
Proven experience building and deploying LLMs or AI agent systems in production
Strong background in machine learning, NLP, and deep learning
Experience with LLM fine-tuning, RLHF/RLAIF, or agent frameworks
Deep understanding of AI system architecture and deployment at scale
Ability to reason clearly about tradeoffs (latency, cost, accuracy, reliability)
Experience at Microsoft, Google (Gemini), Meta, or comparable AI-driven organizations
Contributions to open-source ML/AI tooling or infrastructure
Experience designing evaluation frameworks for LLMs and agents
Prior founding-engineer or early-stage startup experience
Preferred
Educational degrees from top universities are preferred
Exceptional talent without formal academic credentials will still be considered
