Engineering Manager of Substations

Responsibilities

Establish and grow the firm’s substation engineering presence within the Dallas–Fort Worth and Oncor service area, including building out the local office and team
Provide day-to-day leadership, mentorship, and technical direction to engineers and designers, fostering both performance and professional development
Remain actively engaged in engineering and project execution while balancing broader leadership and people management responsibilities
Plan, assign, and oversee engineering work to ensure deliverables meet quality standards, schedules, and budget expectations
Lead project execution efforts, proactively addressing design challenges and coordinating solutions with project and construction teams
Review and approve engineering drawings, calculations, and technical deliverables
Serve as a primary regional point of contact for clients, partners, and internal leadership
Support project development activities including scoping, estimating, and proposal contributions
Anticipate workload demands and develop staffing plans aligned with regional growth
Lead recruiting, onboarding, training, and ongoing development of the local engineering team
Champion a strong safety culture by integrating safe work practices into daily operations and decision-making
Identify and implement improvements to engineering workflows, delivery methods, and operational processes
Collaborate closely with firm leadership to align regional execution with company-wide objectives
Lead with a hands-on, solutions-oriented mindset, sharing expertise and helping team members grow and succeed

Required

6–15 years of relevant experience, including at least 2 recent years in substation design
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering (ABET preferred); strong technical management experience will also be considered
Solid understanding of electrical, mechanical, and civil concepts related to substation design
Comfortable operating with autonomy and ownership
Confident communicator with strong verbal and written English skills
Proven ability to lead, mentor, and motivate technical teams
Strong organization, prioritization, and time-management skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools
Collaborative, team-oriented mindset with a growth focus

Preferred

Professional Engineer (PE) license
Experience with CAD and engineering design software
Prior experience helping launch or scale a local office or regional team
