Traveling Field Protection Engineer

Talent Bridge is hiring for one of their clients seeking an experienced Traveling Field Protection & Control Engineer to support critical utility and substation projects across the United States. This high-travel role involves designing, commissioning, and maintaining protection schemes to ensure the safety and reliability of the nation’s electrical grid.

Responsibilities

Design, test, and commission substation protection and control systems (distribution and transmission levels)
Configure, test, and troubleshoot protective relays, IEDs, communication networks, and SCADA systems
Develop and review one-line diagrams, logic diagrams, wiring schematics, and control narratives
Perform field commissioning, acceptance testing, and system troubleshooting
Interface with utility clients, contractors, and field teams to ensure successful project execution
Provide QA/QC oversight on relay settings, control panels, interlocks, and protection schemes
Ensure compliance with NERC, IEEE, and utility-specific standards
Produce detailed test reports, commissioning documentation, and technical deliverables
Support system upgrades, retrofits, and modernization initiatives

Required

Minimum 6+ years of Protection & Control engineering experience
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field
Strong hands-on experience with protective relays and IEDs (SEL, GE, ABB, or equivalent)
Working knowledge of SCADA and communication protocols (DNP3, Modbus, etc.)
Experience commissioning AC and DC substation control circuits
Proficiency with relay configuration software (e.g., SEL AcSELerator) and Microsoft Office
Excellent technical documentation and report-writing skills
Ability to travel 100% on a 3-weeks-on / 1-week-off rotation
Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills

Preferred

Extensive field commissioning experience
Experience working in both greenfield and brownfield substation environments
Exposure to utility-scale transmission and distribution projects
